A word editing app with basic features

When it comes to writing, having a good writing app can be a huge factor that could affect your productivity. In this respect, no other app has been able to take down the absolute behemoth that is Microsoft Word. However, not everyone really appreciates the bulkiness of Microsoft Word. That’s why more lightweight alternatives are starting to pop-up, and Word Writer is one of those apps. While Word Writer does have the most basic tools expected from an editing app, it still remains to be seen whether or not it can function as a good alternative to MS Word.

Basic Editing Features

Word Writer’s greatest asset is its simplicity. It has a small installer file that makes it quick and easy to install. Word Writer only has the most basic and essential tools for editing such as font style, size, and alignment changes. Users can also add images of different file types and design them in beautiful layouts. In addition to this, Word Writer supports free-form headers and footers. Word Writer also has a powerful Find and Replace function, as well as word count and page numbering.

The app also supports both split-window and fullscreen editing to cater to each user’s preference. Users need not worry about losing data either because Word Writer has an auto-save function for safety. For users who also use other word processing apps, Word Writer can also export files into different file types such as DOCX, PDF, and more.

Myriad of Problems

In theory, Word Writer definitely looks good. However, theory and application are very different, and Word Writer definitely disappoints in terms of actual performance. Probably the biggest concern with this app is the fact that you have to buy the Pro version in order to even save a document. This wouldn’t be a problem if the app wasn’t advertised to be Free. In addition, users who do buy the Pro version still get annoying alerts to upgrade and restore.

The other huge issue is the fact that this app advertises a seamless compatibility performance between it and other Word processors. However, it’s very difficult, if not impossible to get documents from Word Writer to work in MS Word. Unless you have this exact program in another device, it’s very likely to fail opening documents in other devices.

Simple, but Problematic

Unpolished would be too good of a word to describe Word Writer. Saying that it’s free is incredibly deceptive as you need to pay for the Pro version just to get even it's most important functions to work. It has a lot of compatibility issues that make it impossible to work with other devices and programs, and it can’t seem to determine if it's users actually bought Pro or not. To be honest, there are better word editing apps out there, free or not.

PROS

  • Formats bullets and lists
  • Simple UI
  • Supports split-window and full screen editing
  • Can export to PDF files

CONS

  • Keeps asking to upgrade and restore
  • Compatibility issues
  • No app support
  • Can’t save in free version
